" Do it. Be confident, and step forward. All fields need good people "
Assistant Professor, Entomology
I am a university professor, and my field of expertise is entomology (bugs), more specifically livestock entomology (bugs that affect animals). I'm excited about what I do because I get to share my passion for insects through teaching, and I get to contribute to knowledge in my field through research. It's the best of both worlds, really (when everything works.)
While there are many female students in entomology, there are few female professionals, especially in academia. In my specialty of veterinary entomology, this is especially true. I was at a meeting this summer, and I was speaking with the audio-visual technician (a woman) before moderating a session, and he asked me: "So, why are there so few women here?"
Do it. Be confident, and step forward. All fields need good people, so choose where you want to contribute and go full steam ahead.
I enjoy cooking (but I don't bake much), and I like to crochet (but I rarely have time to do it anymore). According to my phone's photo library, I also take many pictures of my cat, Kricket.
I don't know what to expect. Relationships are all unique, and I hope I can build something meaningful with my mentee so we can both keep learning once the program has ended.
