Manager, Swine Health Programs

Manitoba Pork

What is your job and what most excites you about what you do?

I am the Manager of Swine Health Programs with Manitoba Pork. I work with producers, industry and government to create awareness and implement strategies to maintain a healthy Manitoba swine herd. Disease transmission, immunology and biosecurity are exciting to me. I have the opportunity to work with and learn about different diseases in the sector and how to best protect ourselves against them. Biosecurity is such a critical part of our sector. Working to expand and further implement these practices helps the sector as a whole.

How diverse is your workplace, or your field of work as a whole? What do you think should be done to support greater diversity and create more inclusive practices in your workplace and in the Agriculture field?

The pig sector in Manitoba is very diverse. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to work in this proactive field.

What advice would you give to young women interested in a career in your field?

Keep an open mind, think critically, ask questions and be open to change. The beauty of our sector is that it is always changing, with new technologies, new challenges and new opportunities. Opening your mind to be a life long learner will prepare you for any "new" that comes your way.

What are some of your interests outside of work?

I enjoy cooking (pork of course), reading and spending time with my family, preferably outside.

What are you most hoping you will learn from your mentee? What learning goals do you have for this experience?

I would like learn more about individual motivators, how to best motivate and provide support and guidance to a variety of people.
