About the CWSE-Prairies Chair

Dr. Annemieke Farenhorst is a professor in the Department of Soil Science, University of Manitoba and the Prairie NSERC Chair for Women in Science and Engineering. Her Chair program focuses on three key areas:

1 - encourage

Encourage girls to consider careers in science and engineering professions through outreach and public advocacy with an emphasis on helping Indigenous girls in the Prairies learn about university programs involving science and engineering research

2 - celebrate

Celebrate women role models in science and engineering professions and enable female students to access them through a Prairie-wide research scholarship program, as well as mentorship programs.

3 - collaborate

Celebrate women role models in science and engineering professions and enable female students to access them through a Prairie-wide research scholarship program, as well as mentorship programs.

Research

Dr. Farenhorst’s research program focuses on pesticides, natural steroid estrogens and antibiotics in soil and water, and on drinking water quality in First Nations communities. Dr. Farenhorst is the Canadian representative on the Division VI Chemistry and the Environment Committee of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, and an associate editor for the Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part B: Pesticides, Food Contaminants, and Agricultural Wastes. Dr. Farenhorst has earned a range of teaching, research and outreach awards, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for leadership in pesticide research, and she was named a WXN 2016 Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award.
