The Chairs for Women in Science and Engineering (CWSE) is a program launched in 1996 by NSERC, in response to a need for greater diversity and inclusion within the sciences and engineering. The program's goal is to increase the level of participation of women in these fields. Five regional Chair positions are held at universities across Canada.
Dr. Annemieke Farenhorst is a professor in the Department of Soil Science, University of Manitoba and the Prairie NSERC Chair for Women in Science and Engineering. Her Chair program focuses on three key areas:
Dr. Farenhorst’s research program focuses on pesticides, natural steroid estrogens and antibiotics in soil and water, and on drinking water quality in First Nations communities. Dr. Farenhorst is the Canadian representative on the Division VI Chemistry and the Environment Committee of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, and an associate editor for the Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part B: Pesticides, Food Contaminants, and Agricultural Wastes. Dr. Farenhorst has earned a range of teaching, research and outreach awards, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for leadership in pesticide research, and she was named a WXN 2016 Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award winner.
